Scientists have been wracking their brains, (and ours, literally!) in order to figure out what makes our psyche tick. But while doctors, behavioral science, and psychologists still don’t know exactly how our brain works, they’ve discovered a lot of things that can help us understand ourselves and the world around us. At the very least, you’ll feel a lot better knowing what’s going on inside your head. So check some of these facts out that might shed some light on how the human brain works.
We Can Alter Memories
Every time you recall something from your past, that memory changes. So, for example, if your original memory of your 23th birthday didn’t include your mom, your brain might eventually add her in future memories because you know she hasn’t missed a single birthday yet.
We Can Only Have A Few Friends
You can have thousands of Facebook friends, but you’re only capable of being close with a limited number of people according to sociologists and psychologists who came up with the Dunbar’s Number.
We’re Happier When Busy
Our brain tends to release dopamine, a hormone that makes you feel happy when you’re busy doing something that leads to accomplishment. But we’re far less satisfied when we’re waiting or doing nothing at all, which totally explains why we feel so bummed when we’ve got no plans.
