Acting isn’t difficult if you are insanely talented like these guys! But sometimes, fake mustaches, makeup, and latex prosthetics won’t give a performer the look they need for a role. But these committed actors went the extra mile and underwent major transformations in order to look as close to the character as humanly possible. Unfortunately, many of these actors faced extreme physical, mental, and emotional stress and have forever damaged their bodies. Their sacrifices are duly noted.
Christian Bale, The Machinist, 2004
Bale played Trevor Reznik, who suffers from physically and mentally debilitating insomnia, which causes weight loss among other ailments. That’s why Bale went from 173 pounds to 110 pounds by following the Draconian diet. This diet consists of eating one apple and/or one can of tuna PER day, and water and coffee are also permitted. Needless to say, you shouldn’t try this at home!
Chris Hemsworth, Thor, 2011
In order to play the Norse God of Thunder, Hemsworth gained 20 pounds of muscles under the grueling training of Navy SEAL Duffy Gavers. It also looks like he was allowed to keep those muscles for the 2018 sequel Thor: Ragnarok. What’s that sound? Oh, it’s the sound of no one complaining!
Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club, 2013
To play real-life AIDS patient Ron Woodroof, a guy who forced the US government to bring untested AIDS meds to patients, McConaughey had to drop 40 pounds. Ironically, he claims that the weight loss didn’t have any positive or negative impact on his health. Lucky guy!
Natalie Portman, Black Swan, 2010
Portman had to allow all the rules of dancing to affect her life, just like it did her character, Nina. So, she ate carrots and almonds every day and lost 20 pounds, but she was terrified that the diet was going to kill her.
