Socialite Paris Hilton was involved in many projects, like creating a perfume line by Parlux Fragrances. Much like Paris, Britney Spears was involved in making great music, like “Oops!…I Did It Again,” touring the world and launching her own lingerie line. But when Paris Hilton made a claim that she invented the selfie, (something that we’re all guilty of doing) the internet fired back in hilarious ways. Suddenly, Twitter exploded with images from thousands of famous people who took a selfie before Paris and Britney. But who did it first is the big mystery?
Me & Britney
On November 19, 2017, Paris Hilton tweeted that in 2006, she had invented the selfie when she took the first alleged pic with her pal, Britney 11 years ago. Twitter users had a different point of view on that claim, and boy, they were dying to prove her wrong!
Life’s A Witch!
One Twitter user used the 1999 film The Blair Witch Project to challenge Hilton’s claim. Personally, three film students recording themselves as they search for the Blair Witch in a Maryland forest isn’t the same as a selfie, so next!
The Science Guy’s Selfie
Could it be that selfies were invented in 1999? Maybe, but not by The Blair Witch Project. One guy posted a Twitter pic that suggested the amazing Bill Nye The Science Guy did. Makes sense given that he’s a scientist who invents stuff, right? Let’s see who else took a selfie way before Britney and Paris.
Friends Taking Selfies
Kaja from Twitter reminded the socialite that it was Joey from the ’90s sitcom Friends who took a selfie before anyone knew what the term was. Chandler was obviously not amused by the whole thing.
